First Time Setup
When you first open MaltaBin, you'll be guided through a simple onboarding process:
- Location Permission: Grant location access to automatically detect your locality, or choose to select it manually.
- Notifications: Enable notifications if you'd like reminders about upcoming waste collections.
- Explore: Browse the collection schedule, guidelines, and calendar views.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does automatic location detection work?
MaltaBin uses Apple Maps to determine your locality through reverse geocoding. When you grant location permission, the app identifies which Maltese locality you're in and automatically shows the correct collection schedule. You can switch to manual selection at any time.
Can I use the app without location permission?
Yes! You can manually select your locality from the dropdown menu. The app works perfectly fine without location access - you'll just need to choose your area manually.
How do I set up collection reminders?
Go to the Reminders tab, enable notifications, and customize your reminder preferences. You can choose to receive reminders the evening before collection or the morning of collection day, and select which bin types you want reminders for.
Where does the collection schedule data come from?
The collection schedules are based on official waste collection information for all 68 localities in Malta and Gozo. For the most up-to-date information, we recommend checking
wastecollection.mt.
How do I mark a collection as completed?
Tap on a collection date in the schedule view to mark it as completed. This helps you keep track of which collections you've already put out.
Does the app work offline?
Yes! Once you've selected your locality, all collection schedules and guidelines are available offline. Location detection requires an internet connection, but once detected, everything works without internet.
Troubleshooting
Location Not Detecting Correctly
- Make sure location services are enabled in your device Settings
- Check that MaltaBin has location permission (Settings > Privacy > Location Services > MaltaBin)
- Try switching to manual location selection if automatic detection isn't working
- Ensure you're within Malta or Gozo - the app only covers these areas
Notifications Not Working
- Check that notifications are enabled in your device Settings (Settings > Notifications > MaltaBin)
- Verify that notifications are enabled within the app (Reminders tab)
- Make sure Do Not Disturb mode isn't blocking notifications
- Check that your reminder preferences are configured correctly
Schedule Not Showing
- Ensure you've selected a locality (either automatically or manually)
- Try switching locations and switching back
- Force quit and reopen the app
- Check that your device date and time are set correctly
Widget Not Updating
- Remove and re-add the widget to your home screen
- Ensure the app has been opened recently
- Check that your selected location is correct in the app
💡 Tip: If you're experiencing issues, try closing the app completely and reopening it. This often resolves temporary glitches.

Schedule View
View your upcoming waste collections for the next 30 days. Collections are color-coded by bin type (Mixed, Recyclable, Organic, Glass) and today's collections are highlighted.
Calendar View
Browse collections in a calendar format to see what's coming up throughout the month. Tap on any date to see the collections scheduled for that day.
Guidelines
Access detailed waste sorting guidelines for each bin type. Learn what can and cannot go in each bin to ensure proper waste disposal.
Reminders
Set up customizable reminders for upcoming collections. Choose when you want to be notified (evening before or morning of) and which bin types you want reminders for.
